Coco Gauff survived a demanding opening test at the China Open in Beijing, overcoming Camila Osorio 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2 to reach the third round and keep her recent run at the WTA 1000 event intact.
- Gauff edged a tight first-set tiebreak 7-6(4).
- Osorio levelled the contest by taking the second set 6-4.
- The 2024 Beijing champion regained control in the decider, closing out a 6-2 third set.
The American, returning to competition for the first time since her US Open semifinal appearance, was made to work throughout her first WTA Tour meeting with Osorio. The Colombian broke Gauff five times and finished only four points behind across the three-set contest.
Gauff had previously won each of her three China Open first-round matches in straight sets, but this time needed a full-distance effort to protect her streak of reaching at least the semifinals in Beijing in each of the past three years.
Her next opponent will be either Cristina Bucsa or Chinese junior No. 1 Sun Xinran, with that second-round match deciding Gauff’s third-round assignment.
Beijing record and WTA 1000 form
The victory was Gauff’s 23rd at a WTA tournament in China, where she now holds a 23-3 career record. Her .884 winning percentage in the country is the highest recorded this century by any player with at least 10 matches played.
At WTA 1000 level this season, Gauff has won seven of her eight opening matches. Her only defeat in that span came against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in Doha.
