Cristian Cásseres has turned a turbulent summer into a powerful start to the Ligue 1 campaign, becoming Toulouse’s increasingly complete presence in the middle of the pitch.

The Venezuelan international chose to remain with Toulouse despite significant interest during the transfer window and signed a new deal running until 2028. The decision has not interrupted his rhythm: Cásseres is now closing in on his 100th Ligue 1 appearance for the club.
At 26, with 44 caps for Venezuela, the Toulouse vice-captain has taken on even greater influence in the team’s 4-2-3-1 system. Released into a broader role than in his first three seasons in France, he has been effective both in recovering possession and moving the ball forward.
His workload has been striking. Cásseres has covered 44.8 kilometres across four league matches, an average of more than 11 kilometres per game. He is also among Ligue 1’s most involved players in possession, recording 113 touches per 90 minutes, the third-highest figure in the division.
The numbers show that his contribution is no longer limited to defensive midfield duties. He has created one chance per 90 minutes, placing him joint-third in Ligue 1 alongside Ludovic Ajorque and Florian Thauvin. Many of those openings have come from set-piece situations.
Cásseres has also won 10.75 duels per 90 minutes. He does not attempt the most duels in the league, with 15 per 90 minutes, but his success rate underlines his growing authority in Toulouse’s midfield.
His form has also put him near the top of the season’s player-rating standings, with an average mark of 6.5 out of 10. Only Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, on 7.25, has been rated higher.
For Toulouse, Cásseres’ decision to stay is already looking important. The midfielder who once anchored the side is now covering almost every zone of the pitch, setting the tempo as well as stopping it.
