Fresh paint is starting to reach NHL crease territory, and Dave Fried has pulled back the curtain on two of the season’s more distinctive goalie masks: Anton Forsberg’s Los Angeles tribute and Logan Thompson’s full-on dive into Tim Burton’s alien invasion.
Goalie Mask Notebook: Hollywood and Martians Take the Crease
Forsberg worked with Fried on a “City of Angels” design for his Los Angeles Kings mask, keeping the visual connection to Southern California front and center. It follows a similar palette from his first season with the Kings, when his helmet also recognized franchise greats.
- Angel statues fill both sides of Forsberg’s new mask.
- The Kings’ retro crown crest is worked into the artwork.
- Two film reels run across the top, with palm trees placed within the frames.
- The rear plate includes portraits of Forsberg’s children and his dog.
The result is a personal piece as much as a team look, with Los Angeles landmarks and family details sharing space on the same shell.
Thompson Continues His Movie-Mask Run
Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson is sticking with a familiar approach: a new film theme for each mask. Earlier helmets have drawn from “National Treasure” and “Night at the Museum.” This year, he has turned to the 1996 cult favorite “Mars Attacks!”
Fried said the concept surfaced while Thompson was getting tattooed, and the finished helmet leans into the movie’s deliberately over-the-top extraterrestrial style. Alien invaders and their spacecraft appear around the Capitals branding, while Jack Nicholson’s President Dale is featured on the sides.
Faces on the Backplate
- Donald Kessler, portrayed in the film by Pierce Brosnan
- The Rude Gambler, played by Danny DeVito
- Byron Williams, played by Jim Brown
- Another alien character from the film
“Mars Attacks!” had enough recognizable faces to fill an entire dressing room, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, Tom Jones, Natalie Portman, Pam Grier and Jack Black. Thompson’s mask, naturally, has room for only part of that cast.
