David Silva Returns From Retirement to Join Hong Kong’s Supreme ShaTin

Hong Kong is set to welcome one of Spain’s most decorated midfielders after David Silva chose to return to football at the age of 40, signing for Supreme ShaTin following a three-year absence from the game.

The former Manchester City and Spain player had announced his retirement in 2023, when a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury brought an end to his time at Real Sociedad. Silva had spent three seasons with the San Sebastián club before the injury forced him away from the pitch at 37.

A new chapter in Hong Kong

Silva will now continue his career in Hong Kong, the Chinese Special Administrative Region, with Supreme ShaTin. The move takes one of the defining creative players of his generation from Europe’s leading competitions to a new footballing setting in East Asia.

During a long spell at Manchester City, Silva became a central figure in the club’s rise into an English and European force. His close control, passing and ability to find space made him a key presence through a period of major success in Manchester.

World Cup winner returns

At international level, Silva was part of Spain’s squad that won the 2010 World Cup. He also represented a generation that established Spain among the dominant sides in world football.

His return with Supreme ShaTin marks an unexpected resumption of a career that appeared to have concluded after the knee injury in 2023, offering Hong Kong supporters the chance to see a World Cup-winning Spanish midfielder back in competitive football.
