Zheng Qinwen kept her Beijing campaign moving on Tuesday, overcoming Alina Charaeva 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in a 2-hour, 11-minute third-round contest to book a place in the China Open quarterfinals.
Zheng battles into the last eight
The Chinese star took command quickly, racing through the opening set for the loss of one game. Charaeva responded strongly in the second, however, levelling the match with a 6-2 set before Zheng regained control in the decider.
Zheng sealed the 6-4 final set to reach the Beijing quarterfinal stage for the second time from four appearances in the WTA 1000 event. The victory also followed her recent run to the US Open quarterfinals, giving her consecutive quarterfinal appearances across the two tournaments.
- Result: Zheng Qinwen beat Alina Charaeva 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
- Match duration: 2 hours and 11 minutes.
- Round: Third round in Beijing.
- Significance: Zheng advanced to her second China Open quarterfinal.
- It was her first tour-level win over Charaeva.
Home-court WTA 1000 milestone
The result added another notable mark to Zheng’s record on Chinese hard courts. Across the Beijing and Wuhan WTA 1000 events, she has now reached three quarterfinals on home soil.
That total matches Li Na and Zhang Shuai for the most WTA 1000 quarterfinals achieved by a Chinese player in China since the tournament category was introduced in 1990.
The win came on the eve of Zheng’s 24th birthday, providing another lift in a season in which she has continued to build deep runs at major events.
Quarterfinal opponent still to be decided
Zheng will next play either sixth seed Elina Svitolina or No. 21 seed Ann Li, with a semifinal berth at stake in Beijing.
- Potential opponent: Elina Svitolina, the No. 6 seed.
- Alternative opponent: Ann Li, seeded No. 21.
- Next-round prize: A place in the China Open semifinals.
