De Bruyne’s Belgium Double Boosts Napoli Ahead of Serie A Return

Kevin De Bruyne returns to Napoli with Belgium’s latest international window having reinforced a familiar point: even at 35, he remains capable of deciding a match through technique, timing and a sustained influence between the lines. His two goals against Turkey in Liege took him beyond 200 senior career goals and offered Massimiliano Allegri further encouragement before Saturday’s league commitment and a demanding run of fixtures.

A landmark night for Belgium’s captain

Belgium beat Turkey on Friday with De Bruyne at the centre of the performance. He struck twice in 82 minutes, first beating an opponent with a nutmeg before finishing accurately with his right foot, then curling an effort from outside the area into the top corner.

The brace moved him to 201 career goals. Forty of those have come in 127 appearances for Belgium, while his club record is spread across his spells with Genk, Wolfsburg, Manchester City and Napoli.

  • Belgium: 40 goals in 127 matches
  • Manchester City: 108 goals
  • Genk: 17 goals
  • Wolfsburg: 20 goals
  • Napoli: 6 goals, including his most recent club goal against Genoa on the opening matchday
  • Career total: 201 goals

There have also been more than 300 assists across his career. Against Turkey, however, his contribution went beyond the finishing. He repeatedly connected Belgium’s vertical moves, recovered possession and found passing lanes that shaped the game.

His individual numbers reflected that complete display: 68 touches, 85 per cent pass accuracy, 75 per cent shooting accuracy, two tackles, nine recoveries and more than half of his duels won.

“I feel better than last year”

De Bruyne has spoken positively about his physical condition and Belgium’s more aggressive approach under Van Bommel. “I feel better than last year,” he said. “I enjoy this style of football: we push forward aggressively and I am having fun.”

His coach underlined the same mood after the Turkey match, saying: “Kevin always brings joy.” The midfielder received praise from teammates, supporters and opponents alike after his display in Liege.

Belgium will face France next, but De Bruyne is unavailable through suspension. His international work therefore ends with the Turkey performance, after he had also looked sharp against Italy in the previous Nations League outing.

Napoli’s reference point before the next league test

The attention now turns back to Napoli, where Allegri has built much of his attacking plan around De Bruyne’s presence as a trequartista. The Belgian played the full 90 minutes at the Franchi and, even when the match did not fully open for him, gave the sense that one intervention could change its direction.

That possibility affected Allegri’s late decision in Florence. Vergara had been prepared to come on, but the coach ultimately kept De Bruyne on the field.

His influence in Napoli’s early season

  • Against Bologna, De Bruyne supplied the forward pass that began the move leading to Favasuli’s assist.
  • At Marassi, he recorded a goal and an assist for Vergara in Napoli’s 2-0 win.
  • He has been used regularly and has settled into the advanced midfield role.
  • His recent Belgium performances arrive as Napoli prepare for Saturday’s match and a congested schedule.

For Allegri, the value is not confined to goals or final passes. De Bruyne can press, track back, recover the ball and then bring clarity to the next attacking phase. The international break has added another reminder of what Napoli possess: a player still able to dictate the tone of an afternoon when the championship begins to ask for authority as well as endurance.
