Djibril Coulibaly Forced Off in Nice Win After First-Half Scare

The Allianz Riviera fell briefly silent when Djibril Coulibaly went down before half-time against Strasbourg. Nice’s 17-year-old midfielder suffered a minor spell of discomfort during Sunday’s Ligue 1 win, a 2-1 result that was overshadowed for a moment by concern around one of the club’s fastest-rising academy players.

Coulibaly immediately lay on the pitch and Nice’s medical staff quickly came on to treat him. When he stood up, the Pontoise-born player appeared dazed and was helped towards the bench by two members of the staff.

Wearing No. 39, Coulibaly repeatedly touched his face and eyes as he made his way off, looking tired and disorientated. He was replaced by Hicham Boudaoui, who was making his second appearance of the season.

Quick facts

  • Nice beat Strasbourg 2-1 at the Allianz Riviera on Sunday.
  • Djibril Coulibaly, 17, suffered a minor discomfort before the interval.
  • He has started all six of Nice’s Ligue 1 matches this season.
  • Coulibaly turns 18 on 18 November.
  • Hicham Boudaoui replaced him and made his second outing of the campaign.

The incident came in the middle of a remarkable opening to the season for Coulibaly. Under Olivier Pantaloni, the teenager has started each of Nice’s first six league fixtures, a sharp change from last term, when he was limited to two brief first-team appearances under Claude Puel.

Pantaloni’s faith in Coulibaly has become a clear feature of Nice’s early campaign. The midfielder, developed by the club, has taken on a regular role despite still being several weeks short of his 18th birthday.

With limited resources in the summer window, Nice have placed renewed emphasis on their youth set-up. Coulibaly is among the young players now being trusted at senior level, alongside 17-year-old defensive midfielder Xavier Mandza.

The approach follows the summer departure of prospect Kail Boudache, who joined Lyon without a transfer fee. Nice now appear determined to secure the next generation more firmly, with Coulibaly already central to that plan.
