Port of Spain offered the Dominican Republic another demanding Caribbean evening, and the visitors left the Hasely Crawford Stadium with a 2-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago that preserves their perfect start to the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League.
Two rounds into League A Group A, the Dominicans have collected six points, following their 3-2 home win against Nicaragua last Thursday. Trinidad and Tobago, meanwhile, remain without a point after a second successive narrow defeat, having previously lost 3-2 to Haiti in Kingston, Jamaica.
A turnaround before and after the interval
The home side struck first in the 37th minute. Daniel Phillips capitalised after Dominican goalkeeper Xavier Valdez cleared the ball, finishing to give Trinidad and Tobago the advantage.
That lead lasted only five minutes. Mariano Díaz set up Heinz Morschel, whose forceful effort brought the Dominican Republic level before half-time. The decisive moment came soon after the restart: Pablo Rosario released Díaz, and the forward made it 2-1 in the 50th minute.
The closing stages became increasingly physical. Dominican winger Edison Azcona was dismissed for unsporting conduct, as was Trinidad and Tobago’s Wayne Frederick, who had already been booked. Díaz also received a caution after delaying his departure from the pitch.
The Dominican Republic now returns home to face Haiti on Thursday, with a chance to extend an encouraging opening run. Trinidad and Tobago travel to Curaçao looking to halt a difficult beginning to their group campaign.
