Chelsea Captain Reece James Undergoes Knee Surgery After Training Injury

At Cobham, where Chelsea’s season has begun with a brisk mix of emphatic wins and unwelcome absences, captain Reece James has entered another rehabilitation period. The 26-year-old defender has undergone a minor operation on a knee injury sustained during training, leaving Xabi Alonso without a player he regards as central to his squad.

James was not involved in Saturday’s 5-1 home victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, as medical examinations were carried out following the training-ground problem. Those assessments led Chelsea to decide that surgery was required. The club has not set out a timetable for his return.

In its update, Chelsea said the procedure had been completed successfully and described it as minor. James has already begun his recovery programme and will work with the club’s medical staff at Cobham during the rehabilitation process. Chelsea added that the entire club wished its captain a swift return.

A disrupted start for Chelsea’s captain

The knee issue follows an uneven opening stretch for James personally. He featured in each of Chelsea’s first four matches of the campaign, starting three and completing 90 minutes in all three of those starts.

But he had already missed the 3-0 defeat to Brentford on 18 September because of a thigh complaint. He was also left out of the England squad before the international break, and his absence against Bournemouth extended a difficult run at a time when Chelsea had found considerable momentum at home.

For Alonso, the latest setback removes both a senior dressing-room figure and a significant option from the defensive unit. With no projected date yet attached to James’s return, Chelsea’s next fixtures will unfold without their captain while his recovery is managed at the training base in Surrey.
