In the quiet of the international break, away from the attention that followed him in Mexico and the uncertainty of recent months in Europe, Edson Álvarez returned to the West Ham picture. The Mexican midfielder featured in a closed-door friendly against Wycombe Wanderers, offering a small but meaningful sign that his place in east London has not disappeared.
West Ham, recently relegated and preparing for the next round of the Championship, won the match 2-0. Both sides used the occasion to give younger players an opportunity and to bring others back towards match sharpness. For Álvarez, the afternoon was his first involvement after a turbulent spell around his international situation and an unsettled summer in club football.
A place in Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans
Nuno Espírito Santo included Álvarez in his squad for the fixture and introduced him after half-time. The decision underlined the manager’s intention to retain the midfielder for the remainder of the campaign, despite the possibility of a departure at the beginning of the summer window.
The 28-year-old is now expected to build his involvement gradually, with West Ham hoping he can be available for official Championship action in their next league outing. His return gives Nuno another experienced option in a squad being reshaped for life in England’s second tier.
From Amsterdam acclaim to an uneven road
Álvarez left Ajax as one of the most admired figures in Amsterdam, but his subsequent European journey has been less settled. Spells in England with West Ham and in Turkey at Fenerbahce have not brought the same consistency or standing he enjoyed in the Netherlands.
Since leaving Ajax, the Mexico international has played 92 matches across his time with West Ham and Fenerbahce. In those appearances he has scored twice and supplied four assists. The coming weeks may show whether this modest return in a private friendly can become the beginning of a more substantial role in West Ham’s season.
