Celta Vigo’s wait for a second league win continued as they were held 0-0 by Elche at the Martínez Valero, a result that preserved defensive resolve but left both clubs ruing a late chance to change the mood of their season.
The draw was Elche’s third of the campaign and Celta’s fifth. Both sides remain on one victory, with Elche still looking for their first home win after starting the day in the relegation places. For Celta, who had hoped to build on their emphatic win over Racing before the international break, it was another point rather than the lift required to move upwards.
Late openings, no finish
Elche controlled much of a restrained contest and created the best early opportunity when Rubén Sánchez struck the crossbar after winning the ball high up the pitch. Gonzalo Villar had already tested Ionut Radu from range, while the hosts also threatened through Tete Morente, whose close-range chance was stopped by the Celta goalkeeper.
Celta gradually settled after a difficult opening. Ferran Jutglà offered their main attacking outlet in the first half, setting up Hugo Álvarez for a chance at the far post that he narrowly failed to meet.
The second half followed a similar pattern: Elche had more of the ball but found little room against a Celta side that defended in depth. Pablo Durán had an opening for the visitors, only for Matías Dituro to deny him, while Marc Aguado sent a second effort narrowly over after Elche had pressed again.
The clearest moments arrived in the closing stages. Substitute Couhaib Driouech found himself unmarked for Celta but dragged his effort too wide. Elche then had their own decisive opening when Martim Neto received the ball invitingly inside the area, but his shot was too close to Radu.
Neither side could force the breakthrough. Elche had carried the greater attacking weight, but Celta recorded a fourth clean sheet in eight league matches, a total no other team has bettered in the division this season.
Tactical contest leaves both wanting more
Elche began in a 4-3-3 under Anselmi, with Javier Morcillo moved into central defence in place of the suspended Fede Redondo. Rubén Sánchez started at right-back, while Marc Aguado and Tete Morente also came into the side following the win over Espanyol.
Celta’s line-up included Aleix Febas on his return to the Martínez Valero, where he received a warm reception. Borja Iglesias was also honoured before kick-off after becoming a world champion, though he began on the bench and entered during the second half.
The hosts introduced Facundo Buonanotte, Lucas Cepeda, Neto and Abiel Osorio as they chased a winner. Celta replied with Driouech, Williot Swedberg, Sergio Carreira and Iglesias, but the final pass and final shot repeatedly fell short.
One Celta player said the team had wanted all three points but had to recognise the value of a hard-earned draw, admitting Elche’s possession made it difficult to impose their usual game. Another described the encounter as highly tactical, saying both teams struggled to create clear chances and expressing disappointment that the visiting support could not be given a win.
Elche’s view was similarly frustrated. The hosts felt a little more composure had been needed against a five-man defensive line, although the clean sheet was considered an important positive.
A European week still in view for Celta
The stalemate comes with Celta already looking towards Juventus, a fixture that has been on Iago Aspas’s mind since his injury. The forward has returned to fitness and was among the substitutes at the Martínez Valero, while the club retain optimism that better results will follow.
For now, though, the European conversation must wait. Celta leave Elche with another clean sheet and another draw; Elche leave with a point from a controlled display but no home victory. In a season where both teams need momentum, neither found the finish that would have changed the week.
