Elche Captain Josan Detained Following Domestic Violence Complaint

A difficult night has unfolded around Elche captain Josan, with the 36-year-old winger detained after a complaint alleging domestic violence was filed against him.

Josan questioned after complaint

The Spanish player, a leading figure at Elche since joining the club in 2018, was taken into custody on Tuesday and questioned by police.

  • Josan spent the night at the police station in Callosa de Segura.
  • He appeared before a judge on Wednesday in a court specialising in violence against women.
  • The complaint was made by his partner, from whom he is reportedly separating.
  • Photographs said to show bruising were submitted as part of the complaint.

The case concerns allegations and no judicial outcome has been reported.

Elche yet to issue official statement

Elche, currently 18th in La Liga, had not released a public response to the reported detention. However, people within the club disputed that Josan had been arrested and said he trained as usual on Wednesday morning.

Josan has been one of the most recognisable members of the Elche squad over the past eight years, combining his role on the right wing with the captaincy.

Previous controversy at the club

Elche were already under scrutiny last season after signing striker Rafa Mir in the summer of 2025 while he was facing rape charges.

  • Mir was later sentenced to eight years in prison.
  • He has appealed against that conviction.
  • The forward subsequently joined AEK Athens.
