Eleonora Goldoni left the derby defeated but not without a reminder of what football can still offer beyond the result. Lazio Women had lost 3-1 to Roma Women on Saturday, yet an unexpected exchange with supporters from the opposing end gave the forward a moment of warmth after a difficult afternoon.
Once she had acknowledged the Lazio fans, Goldoni was walking back towards the dressing rooms when she heard someone calling her from the Roma section. She was invited to come over and admitted that, in the immediate aftermath of a derby, she was unsure what awaited her.
A Roma supporter wearing the club shirt then approached Goldoni and asked whether she could hug her. The fan explained that, regardless of the teams involved, she wanted to thank the Lazio player.
A gesture beyond the derby result
Goldoni said the supporter spoke not only about football but about the person she sees away from the pitch: the messages Goldoni tries to convey, her willingness to discuss difficult moments, and the strength that those words can give others.
As the two embraced, Goldoni said around 30 Roma supporters behind the fan began applauding and thanking her. It was an encounter that caught her off guard and left a lasting impression on the journey home.
The Lazio forward made clear that the gesture did not erase the disappointment of defeat. She said losing frustrates her, and that she returns home thinking about mistakes, missed opportunities and the things she could have done better. She had wanted the derby to unfold differently and had hoped to win it.
Still, she felt that certain moments can place something positive inside a painful result, rather than remove the disappointment altogether.
Goldoni’s call for respect
Goldoni shared the episode because she believes such acts deserve attention in a game often shaped by provocation, insults, hostile chants and social-media posts intended to sharpen rivalry.
For her, football remains about competition, identity and the desire to beat the opponent. But she argued that those elements should coexist with respect. A player can want victory completely, she said, while continuing to recognise the opponent as a person.
In the long course of a season, derbies inevitably leave their mark through results and league consequences. Lazio will have to absorb the 3-1 defeat to their city rivals, but Goldoni’s experience after the final whistle offered a quieter counterpoint: an applause from the other side and a reminder that rivalry need not erase humanity.
