Barcelona’s northern edge will provide the setting on Saturday morning as Espanyol welcome Atlético de Madrid to the RCDE Stadium for matchday nine of the 2026/27 LaLiga season. The fixture, scheduled for 17 October at 06:00, brings together a side trying to steady its middle-of-the-table campaign and an Atlético team arriving with momentum from both Spain and Europe. Sky Sports will show the match.
Atlético travel to Cornellà sitting second in the table, closest behind Barcelona after a sequence of four league victories. Diego Simeone’s side have beaten Alavés, Real Madrid, Osasuna and Real Sociedad in succession, and they also come into the weekend after a Champions League win over Manchester United.
The visitors have scored 18 league goals and conceded eight, leaving them with a goal difference of +8. Their growing run has put fresh weight on every away fixture, particularly against opponents who need points to avoid being drawn into an uncomfortable stretch of the season.
Different needs at the RCDE Stadium
Espanyol begin the round in 12th place, with 11 goals scored and 11 allowed. Their recent league form has been uneven: defeats to Real Sociedad, Rayo Vallecano and Elche have been offset only partly by a 1-1 draw with Sevilla and a victory over Osasuna.
For the home side, a result against Atlético would offer more than a pleasant afternoon in front of their own supporters; it could restore direction to their league ambitions. Atlético, meanwhile, have the chance to reinforce their pursuit of Barcelona and extend a run that has already included victories over some of the division’s most demanding opposition.
There is also a watching brief around Obed Vargas. The midfielder has continued to be included in Simeone’s squads but has not yet played a minute for Atlético. With league commitments continuing to arrive quickly, the trip to Espanyol may offer another opportunity for him to move from the bench into the action.
The match is part of LaLiga’s ninth round and will be played at the RCDE Stadium, with Sky Sports carrying the broadcast.
