On Merseyside, Everton’s academy pathway has been interrupted by a betting-rule sanction for Martin Sherif, the Netherlands youth international who has yet to make a senior appearance for the club.
Fine imposed after betting-rule breach
Sherif, 20, has been ordered to pay a £5,000 fine, equivalent to about €5,900, after accepting that he breached Football Association betting regulations over a 15-month period.
- The breach covered 61 football bets made between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.
- The FA found that Sherif had caused, allowed or helped facilitate the bets, contrary to rule E1.2.
- He maintained that he had not personally placed any of the 61 wagers.
An independent regulatory commission determined the punishment after weighing a number of mitigating circumstances. Sherif admitted the charge promptly after proceedings were brought in August, cooperated with the investigation and showed what the commission regarded as sincere remorse.
A player still waiting for Everton’s first team
Sherif arrived at Everton’s academy in 2019 and remains without a first-team debut. His development has included two third-tier loan spells during the previous campaign, first with Rotherham United and then Port Vale.
He has also represented the Netherlands at youth level, giving the case a cross-border dimension despite its origins in English football’s strict betting framework.
Everton’s immediate focus
The sanction comes while Everton sit seventh in the Premier League table. The club’s next fixture is against Hull City on Sunday, as the senior side continues its domestic campaign while Sherif’s situation is dealt with away from the first-team spotlight.
