Fabio Vieira Could Lead HSV’s Attack at Hoffenheim

Hamburg’s striker shortage has put Fabio Vieira in contention for a central role at Hoffenheim on Saturday. Yussuf Poulsen remains the preferred No. 9, although he was restricted to individual work at the start of the week after a calf knock in the 2-0 friendly win over FC Copenhagen.

  • Poulsen received treatment at the Volksparkstadion on Monday after reporting calf pain following the Copenhagen match.
  • Head coach Merlin Polzin remains hopeful that the 32-year-old will be available in Hoffenheim.
  • Patson Daka and Albert Grönbaek are out with muscle-fibre tears.
  • Terem Moffi has rejoined parts of team training but is not a realistic option this weekend after knee fluid forced him to miss the international break. His fitness deficit has increased.
  • Poulsen has not played more than 45 minutes since pre-season because of his injury record. He made the difference as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Cologne before the break.
  • Otto Stange, 19, returned from Germany Under-20 duty only during the night before the Copenhagen friendly. He entered after 20 minutes, earlier than planned.
  • Vieira moved into the middle as a roaming striker against Copenhagen, with Stange operating from an advanced half-space.
  • Poulsen believes Vieira can play anywhere in attack, including up front.

What it changes for the Bundesliga week

Polzin’s first choice is still Poulsen. “He is making progress,” the coach said, adding that the club is optimistic he can be ready for Saturday. The unresolved issue is his workload. A place on the bench remains possible even if he is cleared.

That would make Vieira the leading emergency option at centre-forward. The Portuguese playmaker could operate as a false nine, with Stange returning to an attacking wide or half-space role.

Martin Adeline is the main candidate to cover Grönbaek’s usual position. Stange is less suited to playing with his back to goal, which strengthens the case for Vieira through the middle. Poulsen’s message after the scare was simple: there is no need for concern. Hamburg need that assessment to hold through the week.
