In Córdoba, beneath the lights of the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium, Román Vega took a route familiar to many South American footballers but rarely so neatly drawn across continents. The 22-year-old left-back started Argentina’s 4-0 win over Bolivia, played the full match and became the latest player to make his senior international debut under Lionel Scaloni.
The occasion carried added emotion as Argentina returned to the field after the World Cup final and Lionel Messi’s announcement that he will leave the national team. Vega was the only debutant selected from the opening whistle, while Santiago Simón, Valentín Gómez, Leo Flores and Ezequiel “Equi” Fernández were introduced during the match. Franco Mastantuono, the Real Madrid player currently on loan at Fiorentina, also came off the bench.
Scaloni has now handed senior Argentina caps to 70 players since taking charge in 2018. Mastantuono remains the youngest of that group, having made his bow in 2025 at 17 years, nine months and 22 days. Vega’s opportunity arrived just three months before his 23rd birthday, after a club career already shaped by stops in Buenos Aires, Barcelona and St Petersburg.
Barcelona detour before Zenit move
Vega first appeared in Argentina’s top division for Argentinos Juniors in May 2021, against Estudiantes. He soon travelled to Catalonia on loan to Barcelona B, with an option for the club to make the move permanent. Under Rafa Márquez he featured 17 times, but Barcelona did not pursue a full transfer and the defender returned to La Paternal.
Back at Argentinos Juniors, Vega accumulated another 63 appearances and scored once before Zenit paid €7.7 million for him in the middle of 2025. He has already played 35 matches for the Russian side, and his international debut offers another marker of a career that has advanced through less predictable turns than many imagined.
The next possibility is an especially memorable one. Argentina are due to face Benin at the Monumental Stadium next Tuesday, when Messi is expected to bid farewell to the Albiceleste. For Vega, the prospect of sharing the pitch with Argentina’s departing captain would add another remarkable chapter to a journey that has taken him from Argentinos Juniors to Barcelona’s reserve side, Zenit and now the senior national team.
