Galatasaray left northern France with their first Champions League points of the campaign after overturning Lille 4-2 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, a result that deepened the home side’s early European trouble.
Both clubs had begun the league phase with two defeats, making the evening in Lille a significant crossroads. The home supporters made their presence felt before kick-off with a vast tifo and flares in the stands, but Galatasaray absorbed the atmosphere and struck with their first effort on target.
Yunus Akgün opened the scoring after Yılmaz burst down the left and delivered an outside-of-the-foot cross. The ball eventually broke to Akgün, who finished decisively to give the visitors an early advantage.
Lille responded seven minutes into the match through Diaoune. Alexsandro carried the ball beyond halfway during a composed build-up and released his teammate with a precise pass into space. Diaoune took the ball around the goalkeeper before scoring his first goal in Europe’s leading club competition.
A turbulent first half
There was a major refereeing reversal in the 27th minute. Akgün’s outside-foot pass sent Victor Osimhen through, and Lille’s goalkeeper brought down the Nigerian while trying to reach the ball. Referee Rade Obrenovič initially awarded a penalty, only to cancel it after being asked to review the incident on VAR.
Lille then appeared to have seized control. Bakwa got through one-on-one and saw his first shot saved, but the rebound reached Haraldsson, who squared for Diaoune. With the goalkeeper out of position, the forward passed a right-footed effort into the net in the 39th minute.
Galatasaray restored parity before the interval. Batrakov arrived unmarked from deep and headed home from close range in the 44th minute, ensuring the sides went into the break level at 2-2.
Galatasaray take command after the restart
The Turkish side again made an immediate impact after the restart. Lucas Torreira met a curling corner at the near post in the 52nd minute, finding a narrow route into the goal with his header.
Osimhen then settled the contest nine minutes later against the club he represented in the 2019-20 season. Batrakov led a swift counterattack and the ball fell for the Nigeria international, who finished clinically to make it 4-2.
Davide Ancelotti attempted to change Lille’s momentum by sending on more attacking players, but the French side could not create another clear opening. Galatasaray saw out a valuable first victory after their scoreless start to the Champions League campaign.
For Lille, the defeat was a third in three European matches. Their next meeting with Bodø/Glimt now carries major weight if they are to preserve realistic hopes of progressing.
