Gattuso Warns Lazio After 3-1 Win Over Monza

Lazio have added another three points to a fast-moving start and remain level with Inter at the top of the Serie A table, but Gennaro Gattuso left the win over Monza with a warning rather than a celebration.

The 3-1 result kept Lazio’s early momentum intact. Yet the coach saw a familiar loss of control after half-time, even with his side holding a numerical advantage.

Quick facts

  • Lazio beat Monza 3-1.
  • The victory leaves Lazio joint top of Serie A with Inter.
  • Gattuso said Lazio could have led 4-0 at the interval.
  • Monza scored soon after the restart despite being a man down.
  • The Lazio coach called for a more consistent attacking approach across the full 90 minutes.

Gattuso said the match resembled Lazio’s earlier meeting with Milan. In both cases, he felt his team had produced a first half capable of putting the contest beyond reach, only to make the second period unnecessarily uncomfortable.

“It looked like a copy of the Milan game,” he said. “We could have been four goals ahead in the first half. Then, straight after the break, we conceded and it became a struggle.”

The coach told his players after the final whistle that they cannot operate in partial measures. Lazio had ridden their luck against Milan, he said, and were fortunate again against Monza, but he believes that pattern will eventually bring a punishment.

No room for half-measures

Gattuso’s concern is not with Lazio’s ambition, but with its continuity. He wants a side that chooses an aggressive identity to sustain it, rather than retreating into uncertain spells once the game changes.

“We cannot start managing matches,” he said. “If we want to be very attacking, we must try to stay that way for all 90 minutes. A halfway approach does not suit us; we are not able to play like that.”

He accepted that difficult passages are inevitable over a season, particularly for a team setting the early pace. But he also pointed to the lack of support from the stands as an area Lazio must learn to overcome internally.

Without the lift of the crowd, Gattuso said, the players must find ways to generate their own energy. It is a circumstance the club cannot alter, but one that must be handled better as Lazio try to turn an encouraging opening into a sustained championship campaign.
