Gavin McKenna Honors Truth and Reconciliation Day with Maple Leafs

Gavin McKenna stepped into Scotiabank Arena for the second NHL game of his career Wednesday carrying a personal reminder of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Toronto Maple Leafs forward wore a special orange T-shirt pin before the club’s meeting with the New York Islanders, recognizing both the national observance and his Indigenous roots.

McKenna is a member of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation. His grandfather, Joe Mason, survived Canada’s residential school system, a system that separated Indigenous children from their families for more than a century and caused lasting harm across communities.

Before the opening faceoff, the Maple Leafs used the arena video board for a brief presentation on the significance of the day. The moment brought the building’s attention beyond the game and toward the ongoing work of remembrance and reconciliation.

During the ceremony, Toronto’s public-address announcer said the organization recognized the need to listen, learn and act in pursuing reconciliation and respectful relationships. The club also pledged to honour residential-school survivors, their families and communities, while using its platform to encourage reflection and meaningful action.
