Guatemala Hold Suriname to Valuable Nations League Draw

Paramaribo offered Guatemala a demanding Caribbean evening, and Luis Fernando Tena’s side left the Dr. Franklin Essed Stadium with a point built largely on patience and defensive resolve. The goalless draw against Suriname, in the third matchday of Concacaf Nations League A Group B, kept the visitors in touch in the section even as the hosts spent much of the night setting the rhythm.

Suriname signalled its intent almost immediately, pressing forward inside the opening two minutes without turning that early move into a clear scoring chance. Guatemala responded by drawing its lines closer together, conceding territory but limiting the spaces available to the home forwards.

The pattern became clearer before the interval. Suriname produced at least four significant attacking moments in the first half and regularly pushed Guatemala back towards its own penalty area. Tena’s team found few routes out from deep positions, with its priority firmly on organisation and protecting the clean sheet. That work carried Guatemala to half-time still level.

A point carried home from Paramaribo

There was little change after the restart. Suriname continued to dictate possession and territory, looking for the opening that would reward its control of the contest. Guatemala remained under sustained pressure, struggled to create in the final third and relied on disciplined defending as the match moved towards its closing stages.

The visitors did eventually offer a genuine attacking threat in the 78th minute, their most meaningful advance of the match, but neither side found the decisive finish. For Guatemala, the 0-0 result was a valuable act of resistance away from home rather than a night of attacking expression.

The draw takes Guatemala to four points, placing them third in Group B for now. Suriname remain top of the group on six points, although their lead in Paramaribo was not enough to produce the goal that would have strengthened their position further.
