PSG Explore French ‘Joker’ Rule After Kvaratskhelia’s Season-Ending ACL Injury

Paris Saint-Germain returned from their victory over Barcelona with the glow of a major European night quickly replaced by a far more troubling update from the treatment room. Kvicha Kvaratskhelia has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, an injury that will require surgery and rule the Georgian out for the rest of the season.

A European win overshadowed in Paris

  1. PSG defeated FC Barcelona, only for the club’s medical confirmation hours later to cast a shadow over the result.
  2. Tests established that Kvaratskhelia had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
  3. The forward will undergo an operation and is not expected to play again this campaign.

The loss is especially severe for Luis Enrique given Kvaratskhelia’s standing in the side. The Georgian was named MVP of last season’s Champions League and had been one of PSG’s defining attacking figures.

His absence comes alongside muscle injuries to Marquinhos and Ousmane Dembélé, adding to the strain on the French champions as the season moves through its decisive months. PSG still have forward options in Désiré Doué, Ferran Torres, Mika Godts, Akliouche and Ndjantou, but the removal of Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé inevitably reduces both the depth and the star quality available in attack.

The limited route to a replacement

French regulations do not provide a direct equivalent to the long-term injury replacement mechanism used elsewhere for an outfield player injured during domestic or European competition. The relevant provisions are limited to goalkeepers, or to injuries sustained while representing the France national team.

That does not mean PSG are entirely without a route into the market. French football’s post-window “Joker” provision, introduced in the 2000s, could give the Paris club an exceptional domestic option.

  1. Once the summer transfer window has closed and before the winter window opens, a French club may register one additional player.
  2. The player must already be registered with the French Football Federation, meaning he must come from Ligue 1 or Ligue 2.
  3. A signing from outside France would not be permitted under the Joker rule.
  4. PSG would still need to strike a deal with the player’s club, or meet a release clause if one applies.

The Joker is not an injury-replacement rule and would not be activated automatically by Kvaratskhelia’s diagnosis. It is simply an additional recruitment avenue that PSG may consider if a suitable player becomes available within France.

The other possibility would be to sign an unattached player, though there appear to be no particularly compelling free-agent options at this stage of the campaign. For now, the response in Paris is likely to begin with the players already at Luis Enrique’s disposal, while the club weighs whether the French domestic market offers an answer to a season-ending blow.
