Borussia Mönchengladbach’s shortage at right-back is beginning to ease, with Daiki Hashioka and Yukhym Konoplia returning to team training after injury layoffs. Hashioka could yet make the squad for Saturday’s home match against Mainz, while Konoplia is being targeted for the derby at 1. FC Köln on 11 October.
Right-back options return
Konoplia, signed on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk, suffered a medial knee ligament injury at the start of pre-season. The Ukrainian had been expected to become Gladbach’s first-choice right-back but has been unavailable since mid-July.
Hashioka arrived on loan from Slavia Prague as cover following Konoplia’s injury. His Bundesliga debut ended early in the 3-0 defeat at RB Leipzig on the opening matchday, when a heavy collision with Antonio Nusa caused a neck compression injury.
Both defenders are now involved in a gradual return to full training during the international break. Konoplia will not be ready in time for Mainz, but Hashioka’s shorter absence gives him a chance of at least being named among the substitutes.
Cologne derby is the working target
The plan is to have both players ready to build fitness ahead of the trip to Cologne. Their return would give the incoming head coach more depth on a position that has again become a problem area.
The new coach is due to take charge after the Mainz match, following Eugen Polanski’s dismissal on Sunday.
Joe Scally has returned to the side out of necessity. The American had not been central to the club’s plans and had been expected to leave before his contract expires in 2027.
Konoplia brings experience
Gladbach have placed particular hope in Konoplia’s recovery. Sporting director Rouven Schröder described him at the time of the signing as a physically strong, attack-minded full-back with experience and leadership qualities.
Konoplia was a regular for Ukrainian champions Shakhtar, has played international football for Ukraine and has Champions League experience. Gladbach need that background as they seek more stability in defence.
The injuries have also hit the summer recruitment in midfield. Enzo Leopold is out with a cruciate ligament tear, while Zento Uno has had ankle problems among his fitness issues.
