The Atlanta Hawks are moving to reshape their perimeter group, agreeing to send guards Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard, along with cash considerations, to the Charlotte Hornets for forward Dorian Finney-Smith.
The deal was still awaiting NBA approval Tuesday, with the transaction not yet official.
Atlanta adds a veteran wing in Finney-Smith, whose value has long been tied to defensive versatility, size on the perimeter and the ability to work without needing many touches. Charlotte had only recently brought him in from Houston, acquiring Finney-Smith and three second-round picks earlier in the offseason.
Finney-Smith spent last season with the Rockets, though his role was limited. Houston was looking to move off his contract, and Charlotte has now turned around and dealt the forward before he could establish a place in its rotation.
Hield split last season between Golden State and Atlanta, appearing in 51 games and posting 7.6 points per game. The Hawks are also sending out Nembhard, who played 60 games for Dallas last season and averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 assists.
The swap gives Charlotte two guards and additional cash while Atlanta brings in a bigger wing option for its next rotation. Finney-Smith’s arrival gives the Hawks another player capable of taking difficult perimeter assignments while fitting alongside ball-dominant guards on the offensive end.
