How to Master NBA Fantasy Salary Cap in 2026-27

The first roster is only the opening shift in NBA Fantasy: Salary Cap Edition. The 2026-27 season will reward managers who keep working the edges of a Gameweek: tracking injuries, watching which salaries still make sense, reading the schedule and knowing when a short-term move is worth more than patience.

Managers can reshape their teams without restriction before the first Gameday cutoff, set for Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. ET. After that, every Gameweek brings two free transactions. They disappear if unused, rather than rolling into the next week, and any move beyond the allotment costs 100 points from the season total.

That penalty makes the timing important. Rather than burning both free changes immediately, it can pay to let the early Gamedays play out and see whether a player is actually delivering production worthy of his salary. Holding a transaction also gives a roster an escape hatch if an injury hits a key contributor late in the Gameweek.

Free moves are not mandatory. A roster that is piling up points does not need to be adjusted simply because transactions are available. The 100-point moves are best treated as emergency options, the kind of decision that may be justified if several top scorers — such as Nikola Jokić, Tyrese Maxey and Mikal Bridges — all go down at once.

Chips are best saved for the right slate

Three chips can change a Gameday, but only one may be activated on any given day. Gameday Captain is available once per Gameweek and doubles the fantasy total of one selected player. Wildcard can be deployed three times during the season, making every transaction free for the following Gameday. The one-use All-Star chip creates a temporary roster with unlimited free moves and no budget restriction; the original team returns for the next Gameday.

Captain is the straightforward call: use it on a roster’s biggest projected scorer, preferably when the schedule supplies a soft defensive matchup. The Washington Wizards posted the league’s worst defensive rating last season at 121.5, the sort of opponent that would have made Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson a strong captain candidate. Johnson averaged 48.3 fantasy points per game. There is one crucial pregame check, though: an inactive captain cannot be replaced after the selection is made.

Wildcard has more value once the early-season picture becomes clearer. Waiting until the fourth or fifth Gameweek allows managers to identify players who have settled into sustained value rather than chasing a brief opening-week spike. The All-Star chip calls for even more restraint. By the second half, the five leaders in fantasy points per game should be established, and a Gameday on which those elite producers all draw weak defenses is the moment to unload the season’s most powerful roster reset.

The starting five decides the daily return

A 10-player roster only scores through the five players placed in the starting group, so lineup decisions need the same attention as transactions. Keeping one or two premium players active preserves the ceiling on a slate. Those stars will not necessarily reach 60 fantasy points every night, but reliable high-end production is difficult to replace.

The remaining slots can be shaped by the schedule and current form. Games matching the league’s better teams against its lower-tier opponents can open useful fantasy lanes for several players, while a player’s recent output can settle a close decision. Jaime Jaquez Jr. producing more than 40 fantasy points in five consecutive games would be a reason to keep riding him. Jalen Suggs staying below 20 fantasy points for five straight outings would point toward the bench.

The schedule is available in the roster selection area when building a team, near the bottom of that page, and it is also listed at nba.com/schedule with viewing information. The player selection panel on the right side of the roster-selection screen includes a “Value (fantasy season)” filter. It shows the strongest values from 2025-26 and will be refreshed throughout 2026-27.

Managers may enter as many as 25 private leagues and five public leagues, whether the competition is against friends or a wider pool of fantasy players. The standings formula is simple: total points accumulated across the season determine the order. The work comes in preserving those points, one Gameday decision at a time.
