Humberto Suazo Has San Luis Closing In on Chilean Promotion

In Quillota, Humberto Suazo’s first season as a professional coach is heading towards a decisive final week. The former Chile and Monterrey striker has taken San Luis to the top of Chile’s Primera B, with direct promotion to the top flight now within reach.

Quick facts

  • San Luis lead Chile’s Primera B on 53 points.
  • Cobreloa are two points behind in second place.
  • Suazo’s side have won seven league matches in succession.
  • San Luis play Deportes Recoleta on Saturday, 24 October, then meet San Marcos de Arica on 1 November.
  • Suazo retired as a player in October 2025 before taking charge of the club.

The run has changed the mood around San Luis. Suazo began his coaching career amid difficult results and questions over his team’s performances, but the side gradually found consistency and worked their way into the promotion race.

That recovery has carried San Luis beyond contention for the lead and into pole position for the title. With two regular-season fixtures remaining, the club can secure automatic elevation to Chile’s Primera División.

For Suazo, it is a rapid transition from the penalty area to the technical area. He ended his playing career with San Luis, then soon accepted the job of leading the same club from the bench.

Less than a year later, the ex-Chile international and former Monterrey forward is close to delivering a major achievement in his new profession. The trips to face Recoleta and then San Marcos de Arica will determine whether Quillota’s late-season surge ends with the championship and promotion.
