The Italian Super Cup will return to Milan in December, with Inter and Lazio set to meet at the Giuseppe Meazza on 22 December. Serie A’s board has approved a return to a single-match final, ending the four-team arrangement used for the past three editions.
The decision
Inter will approach the fixture as holders of both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia. Lazio, coached by Gennaro Gattuso, earned their place through their run to the final of the domestic cup.
The match also brings the competition back to Italy after recent editions abroad. San Siro last staged an Italian Super Cup final in 2021, when Inter defeated Juventus. The stadium will now host another occasion involving the Nerazzurri, this time against Lazio.
The league has also abandoned the expanded format of two semi-finals followed by a final. Rather than four clubs contesting the trophy, Inter and Lazio will decide it in one game in Milan.
Italy has occasionally hosted the Super Cup in recent years, largely in exceptional circumstances. Juventus beat Atalanta in Reggio Emilia in a previous edition affected by the Covid period, while the Olympic Stadium in Rome staged the 2017 final. Lazio won that match 3-2 against Juventus, with Alessandro Murgia scoring in the 93rd minute.
The competition’s last one-off final was played between Milan and Inter in Riyadh, where Inter took the trophy. December’s meeting at San Siro therefore restores both the single-final formula and an Italian setting for a fixture that has increasingly travelled beyond the country.
