Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez shines after first Spain call-up

In Milan, where Inter’s goal has changed hands after Yann Sommer’s summer departure, Josep Martínez Riera has turned an unexpected opening into the strongest season of his career. The 28-year-old Valencian has now carried that form beyond Serie A, earning a first Spain call-up before producing a startling face-first stop from Donyell Malen scarcely a day later.

A new first choice at Inter

Martínez began the campaign with the significant task of replacing Sommer as Inter’s regular goalkeeper. He has largely met it with assurance, becoming a dependable presence for one of Italy’s biggest clubs.

  • The 28-year-old took over as Inter’s starting goalkeeper following Sommer’s exit last summer.
  • His performances have been consistently strong across the season.
  • His one major mistake came against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

That solitary setback has not altered the broader impression of a goalkeeper making the most of his chance in Milan.

Spain door opens after injury

A place in Spain’s squad had appeared difficult to reach, with Unai Simón, David Raya and Joan García established ahead of him. García’s injury, however, created an available slot and Martínez was selected.

Álvaro Valles had also been in contention after an impressive start to the season, but the Sevilla goalkeeper ultimately missed out as Spain opted for Martínez.

Malen effort stopped by his face

The international recognition was followed almost immediately by a moment that underlined why Martínez has gained attention. Within 24 hours of receiving the call, he denied Malen with an exceptional reflex save.

After the Dutch forward turned and struck, Martínez kept the attempt out with his face, producing one of the standout saves of the season and adding another memorable scene to his rise from Inter starter to Spain international.
