Jeff Ekhator’s first weeks at Juventus have been interrupted before they could properly begin, but his return may yet influence both Luciano Spalletti’s options and the club’s January planning.
The former Genoa forward was brought to Turin as part of Juventus’ longer-term project, with the new Carnevali era at the club beginning alongside his arrival. Two injuries in quick succession, however, prevented him from immediately working with Spalletti and making his case on the pitch.
Ekhator is now focused on rehabilitation and is expected back either late this month or, at the latest, in early November. His recovery will be watched closely because Juventus do not currently have another centre-forward with his physical profile.
A chance to answer Spalletti’s need
Spalletti has sought a traditional number nine in recent transfer windows, without Juventus finding the right solution in the market. Ekhator is therefore the only natural physical striker in the squad, and his availability could offer the coach an internal answer to a problem that has remained open.
The packed programme across November and December should give the young Italy international opportunities to show whether he can contribute immediately. Juventus will assess not only his short-term usefulness, but also how quickly he can progress within the wider project.
January decision remains open
His performances after returning will also help determine Juventus’ approach to the winter window. If Ekhator proves capable of supporting the attack, the club may feel less pressure to recruit in his position. If he needs more time, the discussion may move in a different direction.
Juventus retain strong belief in the player, although a loan until the end of the season remains a possibility if regular football would better serve his development. No decision has been made.
Porto had shown interest in Ekhator during the summer, but Juventus rejected the approach because they wanted to keep him in Turin and use him straight away. The subsequent injuries changed the immediate picture, yet the club did not bring in another player for his role.
That leaves Ekhator with a clear opening when he is fit again: a return that could shape his own first season in black and white, and perhaps Juventus’ next move in the market.
