Jonas Hofmann Open to Overseas Move After Bayer Leverkusen Spell

Jonas Hofmann is planning beyond Bayer Leverkusen, not towards retirement. The 35-year-old wants to continue playing for another two or three years and is open to a move abroad when his time at the club ends.

Hofmann featured for just over 30 minutes in Leverkusen’s 6-0 friendly win over Fortuna Köln on Friday. Martin Terrier scored twice in the victory, while Nathan Tella marked his return from several weeks out with a goal. Hofmann set up Patrik Schick from a corner for the final goal.

The former Germany international had asked to play despite becoming a father for the second time on Wednesday. It was another son. “I’m working on building a football team,” Hofmann said. The coach had left the decision to him, but Hofmann felt he needed to get out and move his legs.

His role has changed sharply at Leverkusen. Competition for attacking places is heavy and Hofmann is currently a reserve option, but he said the situation is not causing him the same strain it did during the final weeks under Xabi Alonso. “I’m relaxed. I know what to expect here,” he said.

Saudi move rejected, overseas option open

Hofmann turned down the chance to join Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia during the summer. He said the decision was not mainly about private or family matters, but that the move did not come together in every respect.

His contract runs until 2027, yet Hofmann expects his Leverkusen chapter to be over in nine months. He remains determined to train at full intensity. “My ambition is the same as it was 15 years ago,” he said, adding that his work on the training pitch has not yet brought the opportunities he wants.

He does not see himself at the end of his career. “Maybe here in Leverkusen, but I will definitely carry on,” Hofmann said. A domestic transfer may be difficult, in his view, as he doubts how many German clubs would pursue a 35-year-old.

A move overseas is increasingly attractive. Hofmann and his family can imagine living abroad, with Major League Soccer among the possible destinations. The appeal is not only football. After a long career, he wants a different environment, new experiences and an adventure.
