Toronto provided the latest stop in Jonathan David’s fast-starting season as the Atlético de Madrid forward scored Canada’s winner in a 1-0 friendly victory over Chile, extending a scoring sequence that now stands at four consecutive matches.
David struck in the 12th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the Chile penalty area and steering a left-footed finish into the net. The goal settled a tight international in Canada’s favour before Chile’s afternoon deteriorated further with the dismissals of Lucas Cepeda and Gabriel Suazo.
A Toronto goal adds to Atlético start
The strike came after David arrived for international duty with three goals from his first three La Liga appearances for Atlético. It is a landmark opening in the Madrid club’s recent history: no Atlético player had begun a league campaign with goals in each of his first three matches since Lubo Penev did so in 1995, during the opening of the club’s Double-winning season.
David is also only the seventh player in Atlético’s history to achieve that three-game league scoring start. His Canada goal has now carried that momentum beyond the Spanish capital and into the September international window.
Managed minutes before Peru
Canada coach Jesse Marsch withdrew David after 62 minutes rather than asking the forward to complete the match. Promise David, the Brighton player, took his place as Canada protected their lead.
Canada’s next fixture is against Peru on Saturday at 8pm Spanish time. David will head into that meeting looking to prolong a run that has made him one of the early attacking stories of Atlético’s new campaign.
