Carolina captain Jordan Staal has locked in one more season with the Hurricanes, agreeing Tuesday to a one-year deal for 2027-28 that can reach $10 million after a Stanley Cup run that put his leadership and playoff scoring at the center of Raleigh’s championship.

The 38-year-old center will receive a $900,000 base salary and a $4 million signing bonus under the new agreement. The contract also includes as much as $5.1 million in performance incentives.
Staal is still headed into the last year of the four-year contract he signed with Carolina on June 25, 2023. That deal carried a total value of $11.6 million and an average annual value of $2.9 million.
“Jordan is more than our captain; he is the foundation of the culture built here,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. “What he brought on the ice last year, particularly through the playoffs, was vital to getting the Cup back to Raleigh.”

Staal posted 20 goals and 16 assists in 75 regular-season games last season, finishing with 36 points. His game climbed another level in the postseason, where he produced eight goals and four assists in 19 games while captaining Carolina to the franchise’s second Stanley Cup championship.
He received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs for that performance.
The veteran has worn the captain’s “C” for Carolina since 2019 and remains one of the major fixtures in franchise history. Since arriving from Pittsburgh in a June 22, 2012 trade, Staal has played 972 games for the Hurricanes/Whalers franchise, second all-time. He ranks fourth in assists with 301 and fifth in points with 499.
Pittsburgh selected Staal second overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. Across his time with the Penguins and Hurricanes, he has recorded 318 goals and 429 assists for 747 points in 1,403 regular-season games.
His postseason résumé now includes 46 goals, 39 assists and 85 points in 181 games. Before lifting the Cup as Carolina’s captain, Staal won his first championship with Pittsburgh in 2009.
