Seville’s La Cartuja gave Porto a night of goals, missed openings and another European setback, with Francesco Farioli believing his side had enough opportunities to leave Spain with more than a 3-2 defeat to Real Betis.
Porto let a lead slip in Seville
- Porto went ahead in a match Farioli described as chaotic, but could not turn that advantage into a decisive result.
- After moving 2-1 in front, the Portuguese side created two or three strong chances through Alberto to put the contest beyond Betis.
- Those openings were not converted, allowing the home side to remain in the game and eventually take a 3-2 victory.
- Porto continued to find attacking situations until the final stages and, in Farioli’s view, might have scored another two or three times.
The Italian coach felt Porto deserved a better outcome after their work for much of the evening. He pointed to Alan Varela’s role in helping the visitors create opportunities, but said his team rushed their decisions once they reached the final third.
“We had very good chances after going 2-1 up, with Alberto having two or three moments to finish the match,” Farioli said. “It was a crazy game. We could have scored two or three more goals by the end, and I think we deserved more.”
European mistakes carry a heavier cost
Farioli accepted that Porto’s errors were punished severely on the Champions League stage. “This is the Champions League: when we make mistakes, we pay twice for them,” he said.
He also praised Betis, describing the Andalusian club as a strong side with players capable of deciding matches in key moments.
The result leaves Porto without a point from their opening two European fixtures. Yet Farioli insisted there should be no lingering negativity as the club turns towards its next continental assignment against PSV.
“There is no negativity,” he said. “We have to prepare for PSV. A lot can still happen, but we have to begin somewhere, and the PSV match needs to be one of those starting points.”
