After Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday, the coach again spoke warmly of the Brazilian club but admitted that a future return now appears increasingly unlikely.
Portugal build early momentum under Jesus

Flamengo memories remain close
Jesus described his time at Flamengo as perhaps the finest spell of his club-coaching career, stressing that it carried importance beyond trophies and results. He said the supporters’ affection has stayed with him.
“It meant a great deal to me, perhaps the best period of my career as a club coach,” Jesus said. “It was historic, not only in sporting terms but emotionally as well. I will never forget the way Flamengo supporters embraced me and showed me affection.”
The Portuguese coach said he had long imagined going back to Flamengo one day. However, taking charge of Portugal on a long-term basis has changed the outlook.
“I always thought about returning to Flamengo, but I am sure it has now become difficult,” he added.
A message before the Oslo match
Before facing Norway, Jesus had already sent good wishes towards Brazil and signed off one television interview with a message of support for his former club: “Strength, Flamengo.”
For now, though, his work is in Portugal’s colours. Two matches have produced two victories, from Lisbon to Oslo, while the possibility of another Flamengo chapter has moved further into the distance.
