Juventus-Atalanta was preceded by a discordant moment during the nationwide tribute to Sandro Mazzola, whose death was announced overnight between Friday and Saturday.
The decision
Italian sport observed a minute of silence across the weekend in memory of Mazzola. Before the match in Turin, however, part of Juventus’ Curva Sud turned its back on the pitch and chanted for former Juventus figures Gaetano Scirea, Andrea Fortunato and Gianni Agnelli.
The response from elsewhere in the stadium was markedly different. The rest of the crowd distanced itself from that section and applauded Mazzola during the tribute.
No comparable incident had been reported at other Italian stadiums or indoor arenas between Saturday and Sunday, where the minute’s silence had otherwise been observed without disruption.
