Juventus received a welcome international-break update after Francisco Conceição avoided a serious knee injury while playing for Portugal in Oslo. The winger’s discomfort briefly raised concern at Continassa, where the club is already dealing with an unfavourable injury spell, but the initial assessment has brought reassurance.
A scare in Oslo, then encouraging news
- Conceição went down during Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway at Ullevaal Stadion on Sunday evening following a heavy challenge with Ryerson. Holding his left knee, the Juventus attacker required several minutes of treatment from Portugal’s medical staff.
- The incident came shortly before half-time. Conceição was able to continue and also returned for the start of the second half, an early indication that the problem might not be severe.
- He played another nine minutes before being replaced by Rafa Leão. The substitution was precautionary, although it was clear that the impact had left him uncomfortable.
- Portugal’s subsequent examination found a painful bruise around the thigh and knee area, rather than a more serious injury. The issue is expected to settle within a relatively short period.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus underlined Conceição’s contribution before the knock forced the change. “He gave me very positive answers,” Jesus said. “He did very well until that blow, when I had to take him off. He was the creative player I wanted.”
Useful evidence of Conceição’s influence
His 54 minutes against Norway supported that assessment. Conceição created one chance, made four defensive recoveries, won two tackles and came out on top in three of his six ground duels.
Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti will continue to follow the winger through Portugal’s remaining fixtures against Denmark and Norway before welcoming him back for the return of domestic and European commitments.
The concern comes after a strong opening to Conceição’s Juventus season. He scored the decisive goal against Atalanta after striking the woodwork against both Parma and Milan, and his early league figures place him at the head of several club attacking categories.
- 12 attempts at goal
- 5 shots on target
- 23 crosses
- 8 chances created
For Juventus, the medical outcome matters beyond one international fixture. Conceição has become one of the side’s most productive players across the first five Serie A rounds, and the prospect of his swift recovery offers Spalletti an important option as the season’s next chapter begins.
