Kenneth Walker III delivered an immediate payoff for the Kansas City Chiefs, turning his Arrowhead debut into a record-setting performance in a 31-10 Monday night victory over the Denver Broncos.

Walker, brought in during the offseason to give Kansas City’s running game more punch, ran for a career-best 173 yards on 23 carries and scored on a 60-yard touchdown run. He also caught three passes for 18 yards and another touchdown, finishing with 191 yards from scrimmage.
The Chiefs gave Walker the ball 26 times overall, a workload that underscored their view of him as a complete, three-down back. His combination of tackle-breaking strength and open-field speed helped Kansas City establish an offensive identity that has often been absent during Patrick Mahomes’ time as the starting quarterback.
“I said it at my first press conference: K9,” Mahomes said when asked what had changed in the offense. “He can run it and catch it. I got one to him a little too quickly on a read that might have been a big play, but he has special ability. He runs tough inside, and when he gets outside, he can take it all the way. We’re going to use him.”
Walker’s 60-yard score came after he recognized Denver’s defense collapsing inside. He bounced the run to the perimeter, beat a cornerback in space and pulled away down the sideline.
“We had called that play a few times,” Walker said. “I knew they were going to come downhill inside, so I took it outside. Once I got one-on-one with the corner, I ran past him and it was gone.”
It was Kansas City’s longest rushing touchdown since Damien Williams posted scoring runs of 91 and 84 yards in 2019. Over the previous two seasons, the Chiefs’ longest run had been a 35-yarder by wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Walker generated 101 rushing yards over expected and forced 14 missed tackles, showing why Kansas City believed he could transform a rushing attack that had been largely secondary to Mahomes’ improvisational ability. The Chiefs have not produced a 1,000-yard rusher since Mahomes became their starter, and their ground game had been inefficient in recent seasons.
His 173 rushing yards were the most ever by a player in a game started by Mahomes. Walker also set personal bests in rushing and total yards, while his 191 scrimmage yards marked the highest Week 1 total ever recorded by a reigning Super Bowl MVP. He topped the prior mark of 180 yards set by Jerry Rice in 1989.
Among veterans making their first appearance for a new club, Walker’s Week 1 rushing total ranks second all time, behind Michael Turner’s 220-yard debut for the Atlanta Falcons in 2008.
Coach Andy Reid praised Walker’s ability to handle the lead role after splitting work with Zach Charbonnet in Seattle. Reid also highlighted reserve running back Emmett Johnson, saying both backs showed rare balance through contact and created significant yardage after first contact.
“For him to perform like that was spectacular,” Reid said of Walker. “You want to see him be the featured guy, and he handled it really well. Emmett did a good job when he got his chance, too. Both of them have ridiculous contact balance, and that is a special quality.”
The Chiefs entered the game with undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson starting at left tackle, making a forceful rushing approach especially valuable against Denver’s defense. Kansas City’s passing game did not find an early rhythm, but the offensive line controlled the game at the line of scrimmage.
“The offensive line accepted the challenge against that defense and set the tone,” Mahomes said. “The passing game did not work the way we wanted early on, but the run game established how we were going to move the football.”
For Walker, the heavy usage was as meaningful as the production.
“It means a lot,” he said. “It shows they trust me, and it feels good to have that trust.”
