Kimberly Birrell broke through for her first WTA singles trophy at the Korea Open in Seoul, defeating fellow Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2 in a landmark final between two players from the same country.
The 28-year-old had fallen short in each of her previous two WTA Tour singles finals, but she reversed that record with a composed 83-minute performance against Joint in their first tour-level meeting. It was the first all-Australian WTA singles final since 2017.
Joint made the sharper opening, taking an early break for a 2-0 advantage. Birrell responded immediately, however, finding two breaks of her own to recover the set and take it 6-4.
The second set began with another exchange of service breaks before Birrell established control. She moved ahead with a further break and closed the championship match by breaking Joint again in the last game.
Birrell makes the most of key return games
Birrell converted six of her 10 break-point chances, while Joint took three from six opportunities. The decisive difference came in the error count: Joint finished with 41 unforced errors against 12 winners, while Birrell struck 10 winners and kept her unforced-error total to 21.
The title is expected to lift Birrell, currently No. 60 in the WTA PIF Rankings, into the Top 50 for the first time when the updated rankings are released on Monday.
