Kompany Focuses on Bayern as Manchester City Verdict Looms

Vincent Kompany has declined to comment in depth on Manchester City’s Financial Fair Play case, insisting his attention is on Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga.

An independent Premier League commission has found City guilty on all 115 charges brought against the club. A final punishment has not yet been decided. Kompany, who spent 11 seasons at City as a player, was asked about the ruling 10 days after the verdict.

“I am fully occupied with what I have to do for Bayern,” the 40-year-old said. “We have important matches and that takes a lot of time. There is not much room to think about other things.”

Kompany returned to the Etihad Stadium less than five months ago for Pep Guardiola’s farewell, arriving with one of the four Premier League trophies he won as City captain. Those titles now sit under a different light while the sanction process continues, but Bayern’s coach did not want to add to the debate.

Kompany’s City years remain personal

The Belgian was central to City’s rise. He helped end a league-title wait of more than four decades in 2012, then won three further championships. He made 360 appearances for the club and also collected four League Cups, two FA Cups and two Community Shields.

His final City goal remains one of the defining moments of that period. Against Leicester City in May 2019, Kompany stepped forward in the 70th minute and struck from around 25 metres into the top corner. Team-mates had urged him to pass to Leroy Sané or Sergio Agüero rather than shoot. It was his only City goal from outside the penalty area and helped decide the title race.

“For me, it is very simple,” Kompany said. “I played there for 11 years. I stand completely behind what we did on the pitch and the feeling we had. I loved every year. I am proud of what we achieved. Everything else is honestly far away from my reality at the moment. I am here with Bayern in the Bundesliga, and we have to win here.”
