Strengthening the right of the defence was a summer priority for sporting director Rouven Schröder. Konoplia arrived with the profile Gladbach wanted: a robust, active defender with senior experience at club and international level.
Schröder described the new signing as physically strong and eager to play, noting his regular role for the Ukrainian champions, international appearances and leadership qualities.
But Konoplia’s first weeks in Germany were interrupted before he could establish himself. He was injured in a challenge during the second pre-season friendly, a 2-1 victory at Rot-Weiss Essen in late July. The knee problem ruled him out for two months and cost him the opening phase of the season.
His outing in Siegen was his first appearance under Blessin. It was a useful return, but not yet proof that he is ready for the demands of league football.
A different job under Blessin
Konoplia was initially recruited as a right-back for the 4-2-3-1 shape used under Eugen Polanski. Blessin is expected to favour a back three, with a 3-4-3 among the likely structures.
That would shift Konoplia into a wing-back role on the right. It requires repeated running at both ends of the pitch, as well as defensive reliability after a lengthy absence.
Blessin has taken over with Gladbach needing stability and confidence following the poorest start to a season in the club’s history. The coach cannot simply talk those problems away. Konoplia’s availability gives him another option, though match sharpness remains the central question.
The trip to St. Pauli should provide the next answer. A convincing showing could put Konoplia in the conversation to start the derby against 1. FC Köln.
