Kristaps Porzingis Out Indefinitely as Warriors Open Training Camp

Kristaps Porzingis will not be on the floor when the Warriors open training camp in Hawaii, with Golden State listing the veteran center as out indefinitely because of a health matter. General manager Mike Dunleavy said the club has not set a timetable, though he stopped well short of treating the absence as a season-long concern.

Warriors enter camp without Porzingis

Dunleavy learned of the development Sunday, one day before Golden State’s media day. Porzingis had recently been at Chase Center for workouts, and Dunleavy said the 7-foot-2 big man had appeared to be progressing well before the new update.

“He had been around last week and was doing fine,” Dunleavy said. “There is no timetable right now, but we hope he is back in the near future.”

“It is early, so we do not want to overreact,” Dunleavy said. “It is disappointing that he cannot be with the group tomorrow, but we will get there.”

Kerr calls update unexpected

Steve Kerr said he was caught off guard by the news, but the coach plans to push forward with camp while expecting Porzingis to rejoin the rotation at some point.

“We will start camp and expect him to be with us eventually,” Kerr said. “There is not much more to share at the moment.”

Porzingis also dealt with a medical matter and illness last March, when Kerr described the situation as “mysterious.” This latest absence again leaves Golden State short on clarity at center just as its preseason work begins.

A major frontcourt piece after limited debut

The Warriors committed to Porzingis late in June, when he agreed to a two-year contract worth $40 million. The 31-year-old Latvian arrived from Atlanta at the February trade deadline in the deal that sent Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga to the Hawks.

His first stretch in Golden State was interrupted by missed time. Porzingis played 32 games overall last season and appeared in 15 of them for the Warriors, making 11 starts.

For now, Golden State will begin its camp reps without one of its biggest interior options, while holding out hope that Porzingis can still be available when the regular season opens in Los Angeles.
