In Madrid, a transfer that appeared to be moving quietly towards completion has stalled under the glare of La Liga’s financial controls: Dani Carvajal’s proposed free move to Getafe has not yet been approved.
The Ligue 1 news
Carvajal, the 34-year-old Spanish right-back, is reportedly being prevented from joining Getafe because La Liga’s financial committee considers the salary proposed by the club unrealistic.
The former Real Madrid player was earning €10 million per year at his previous club, while Getafe’s offer is understood to be worth €400,000 annually. That dramatic gap has prompted concerns that undisclosed sponsorship deals or other hidden funding arrangements could be used to supplement his income.
La Liga and its president Javier Tebas are said to be wary of any undeclared financial support intended to provide the player with a significantly higher package than the contract officially registered by Getafe.
The same financial rule applies across the division, and the competition’s authorities had not given the deal clearance at the time of the latest update.
Getafe president Angel Torres had already cast doubt on the move when questioned in the city on Wednesday. “He will not come. Why would he come?” Torres said, adding that his earlier comments had been a joke.
Asked whether an agreement could be completed within the following hours, Torres answered: “No.” He also pointed to the number of available free agents, naming Dani Parejo and Sergio Ramos among them.
