Yamal’s flair on the Barcelona wing and Mbappé’s decisive output for Madrid have attracted much of the early acclaim, leaving supporters and commentators to weigh different definitions of footballing excellence.

Manolo Lama has made his personal preference clear, backing Yamal over Mbappé on the basis of the football he produces. For Lama, the Barcelona teenager is the player he would most want to watch from the stands.
“To me, Lamine is the most beautiful footballer to watch,” Lama said. “What does being the best in the world mean? Is it being the most effective, winning the most titles, making the most dribbles? Between Lamine and Mbappé, if I had to buy a ticket, I would pay to see Lamine.”
It is a contest between two of Spanish football’s defining figures, even if their cases are likely to be judged through very different lenses by the time London hosts the ceremony.
