Lens Fans Face UEFA Scrutiny After Flares Halt Bruges Defeat

Lens returned from Bruges with a heavy European defeat and a disciplinary concern that may travel further than the 3-0 scoreline. On a difficult night in Belgium, the French side saw their supporters’ section become the focus of UEFA attention after flares were thrown onto the pitch, forcing a temporary stoppage around the half-hour mark.

The incident was recorded by UEFA officials and disciplinary proceedings are expected against RC Lens. The possible punishment ranges from a financial penalty to restrictions on supporters attending forthcoming European away fixtures, a prospect made more serious by the club’s recent record.

During the opening round of this season’s Champions League, Lens fans also used flares in the away match against Slavia Prague. That episode resulted in a probationary sanction, and the recurrence in Bruges is likely to weigh on UEFA’s decision. Belgian authorities had already classified the fixture as high-risk in light of those earlier events.

On the field, Lens had enough of the play before the interval but left Bruges without reward for their early control. Hans Vanaken put Club Brugge ahead in the 45th minute, shifting the mood inside the stadium just before the break. Yannick Cahuzac’s team could not recover after that blow.

Joaquin Seys and Carlos Forbs added the further goals as Brugge pulled away, while Lens’ finishing repeatedly failed them at the other end. Yan Sommer was also in fine form whenever the visitors threatened to reduce the deficit.

The result leaves Racing Club de Lens 27th in the European table. Their next continental assignment is against Cesc Fàbregas’ Como, who sit 18 positions above Lens, while the club waits to learn whether UEFA will impose another sanction on a season already marked by concerns beyond the touchline.
