Madrid moved through a European night at the Santiago Bernabéu with one eye already turned towards Barcelona, overcoming RB Leipzig 4-1 and carrying renewed confidence into Sunday’s Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou.
The news from the club
Real Madrid had treated Leipzig’s visit as a meaningful examination before their LaLiga trip to Catalonia. The German side are a very different opponent from Barcelona, but the Bernabéu crowd and the home players approached the occasion as a chance to establish momentum.
Leipzig created danger on two or three occasions during the first half, only for Thibaut Courtois to deny them with two saves of major importance. Madrid then found their way in front before the interval: Bernardo Silva finished a move which had begun with an effort from Arda Güler.
The second half brought greater freedom for the home side. Kylian Mbappé was involved in the move for the second goal in the 52nd minute, with Güler applying the decisive touch on the line. Mbappé then struck himself in the 83rd minute before Diomande completed the scoring four minutes later, producing a volley in his first significant contribution for Madrid.
The result keeps Madrid perfect in this Champions League campaign and places them among the leading sides in the competition.
There were also clear selection and squad messages from the evening. Federico Valverde has established himself as José Mourinho’s first-choice right-back, while Güler and Bernardo Silva offered Madrid greater command of the ball. Diomande’s late impact further strengthened his standing with the supporters, with Vinícius facing increased competition for affection in the Spanish capital.
Barcelona awaits on Sunday
The Bernabéu victory offers encouragement rather than a guarantee for what comes next. Madrid travel to Barcelona on Sunday for the Matchday 10 LaLiga meeting at Spotify Camp Nou, where the demands and atmosphere of the Clásico will present a different kind of test.
