Lens have changed coach before the Ligue 1 season has properly found its rhythm, removing Dino Toppmöller after four league matches despite flashes of attacking force and two notable wins in cup competition.

Yannick Cahuzac has taken over after Toppmöller was dismissed on Tuesday, leaving the German without the chance to lead Lens into Friday night’s home meeting with Monaco, scheduled for 20:45.
The league record proved decisive: four points from four matches, with Lens beating Auxerre 5-2 before defeats to Strasbourg and Lorient, then a 2-2 draw against Le Mans. The club sat 10th in Ligue 1.
That domestic start came in sharp contrast to results elsewhere. Lens beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Trophée des Champions in mid-August and opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Slavia Prague six days before the managerial decision.

The data paints a split picture. Lens have generated the largest expected-goals total in the division, while their attacking output is also backed by chance quality, non-penalty shots, touches in the opposition box, attempts from inside the area and shots on target.
But the other side of the pitch has been far less convincing. Their expected-goals difference stands at plus 1.5, which ranks fifth in Ligue 1 behind Brest, Paris FC, PSG and Toulouse, yet the defensive numbers have exposed a team allowing too much.
The 5-2 win over Auxerre has heavily influenced the early totals. Lens played nearly an hour with an extra man and accumulated 4.1 expected goals in that match alone, around 40 per cent of their season total. Two converted penalties also drove that figure upward.
Remove the unusual Auxerre match and the balance turns negative. Lens’ expected-goals difference drops to minus 1.1, a return ranked 12th in the league.
From matchday two through matchday four, only Marseille conceded a greater volume of chances than Lens. There are obvious limits to judging a campaign from such a small sample, but the defensive concern has been persistent enough to stand out.
The draw at Le Mans contained one especially damaging sequence. Adil Bourabaa’s opener followed two attempts within seconds in front of an empty goal in the 32nd minute, a passage valued at 1.91 expected goals. Even if only one of those efforts is counted, Lens’ defensive record remains poor.
Toppmöller was working through a summer of major change. Lens lost key players including Sangaré, Thomasson, Sarr and Saïd, while Baidoo and Abdulhamid have missed several matches at the start of the campaign.
Integrating a new group under a new coach, particularly in a system dependent on organisation without the ball, usually takes time. Lens’ hierarchy decided not to grant Toppmöller that period, for reasons extending beyond league results alone.
There was also a reminder from last season that four games do not always tell the whole story. At the same point last year, Pierre Sage’s Lens had six points: a 2-1 win at Le Havre, a 3-1 victory over Brest after playing against 10 men, and defeats to Lyon and Paris.
The performances and underlying numbers were different then. But after a strong 2025-26 campaign, expectations in Lens have risen, and the margin for an uneven opening has become smaller.
