After inspections involving LaLiga officials and the match refereeing team, the decision was taken to suspend the game permanently because of the conditions. Athletic confirmed that the adverse weather at the stadium made it impossible to proceed.
Valencian authorities had placed the area under an orange weather alert earlier in the day, with heavy rainfall predicted for the scheduled kick-off period. Those warnings proved accurate as the downpour intensified around the ground.
There will be no attempt to play the match the following day. A new date must now be found, with confirmation expected shortly. Athletic’s party left the stadium at 21:45, 15 minutes after the original start time.
Basque calendar waits beyond Valencia
Athletic now turn towards Saturday’s trip to Mendizorrotza to face Alavés. That fixture will be followed by two league-free weekends, although Terzic is expected to be without the three World Cup winners Unai Simón, Laporte and Nico Williams during that period.
The club are also scheduled to meet Real Sociedad in the Euskal Herria Kopa final at Anoeta on Friday, 2 October, adding another cross-Basque appointment to a calendar reshaped by Valencia’s weather.
