Lille’s season has suffered a major blow after Tiago Santos was diagnosed with a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, with associated meniscus damage.
The Ligue 1 news
The Portuguese right-back was injured early in Saturday’s 1-0 Ligue 1 victory over Le Havre. Lille confirmed on Monday that Santos faces a lengthy rehabilitation period, depriving the team of its established starter on the right side of defence.
Santos had made a strong start to the campaign before the setback. It is also another painful episode for the defender, who sustained a similar injury in 2024.
Lille have raised serious concerns about the incident which led to the injury, particularly because no sanction was issued during the match. Amir Richardson was involved in the challenge, although Lille did not name the Le Havre player in its statement.
The club said the circumstances of Santos’s injury and the lack of punishment had left it with major questions. Lille have formally contacted both the French Football Federation and the Ligue de Football Professionnel to request a review of how the refereeing team and VAR handled the action.
LOSC want an explanation for a decision they believe ran against the Laws of the Game, player safety and sporting fairness. The club have also asked the LFP president to refer the matter to the disciplinary commission.
Lille are examining the legal options available and have said they reserve the right to seek compensation for the damage suffered. The club added that it will support Santos should he choose to take his own steps to defend his rights.
