Alexander Isak is heading back to Merseyside after suffering a minor injury while on Sweden duty, with Liverpool set to assess the forward at the AXA Training Centre.
The 27-year-old leaves the Swedish camp after scoring in Friday’s 2-1 win over Romania. His international break had been due to continue with Nations League fixtures involving Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania, but he will take no further part in Sweden’s programme.
Liverpool medical assessment awaits
Liverpool confirmed that Isak’s withdrawal is precautionary following the issue picked up with his country. The club’s medical staff will now examine him at Kirkby before determining his availability for the next stage of the season.
Isak, identified as a Newcastle United player, had made an immediate impact for Sweden against Romania, finding the net in the victory on Friday before the injury brought an early end to his international assignment.
The Reds return to domestic action when Manchester City travel to Anfield on Sunday, 11 October. Liverpool will await the results of Isak’s tests before clarifying whether he can be involved in that meeting.
