Liverpool vs Manchester City: Early Premier League Title Test at Anfield

Anfield is set for one of those early-season afternoons that can make the table look rather different by teatime. Liverpool, still unbeaten but short of the pace after five fixtures, welcome a Manchester City side who have made a flawless start and arrive with the league lead in their possession.

In the dressing room

Liverpool begin the sixth Premier League round in eighth place on nine points. Andoni Iraola’s side have won twice and drawn three times, preserving their unbeaten record without yet finding the rhythm that turns steady starts into a proper chase for the leading pack.

Home backing will matter at Anfield, where Liverpool have the chance to trim the gap to the summit and make a firmer statement after a sequence of draws. The fixture brings a severe test, but also the sort of occasion in which a season can acquire some shape.

Manchester City travel north with 15 points from 15, having won each of their opening five league matches. Enzo Maresca’s leaders were last seen beating Sunderland 5-3, another result that underlined both their attacking force and their determination to keep the perfect run moving.

Club Premier League position Points Record after five matches
Manchester City 1st 15 Five wins
Liverpool 8th 9 Two wins, three draws

A difficult visit for the leaders

City have been in fine working order, but Anfield is among the harder away grounds on the calendar, particularly against opponents who have not yet tasted defeat. Liverpool’s task is to turn that resilience into a result with more weight; City’s is to leave with their record intact and their place at the top unchanged.

The week ahead will reveal whether Liverpool can use this home meeting as a launch point after a draw-heavy opening, or whether City’s winning start carries on into another round. Either way, the leaders’ visit to Anfield has arrived early enough to make plenty of noise and late enough for both sides to know what is at stake.
